A study conducted in Philadelphia Public Schools found that if low income students had one adult in their high school with whom they had a close relationship they were significantly less likely to drop out. This has proven to be true at EPIC as well. The relationships that students and families have with their crew teachers are some of the most powerful.
Crew Counseling: Provide 1-on-1 check-ins with students to follow up about their goals and how they are doing (9th grade crews will have 2 staff members for this)
Crew Cup: Games played against other crew.
Community: The Whole Grade Level gathers across the street in the gym (12th in the Gym Room upstairs). Each crew sits together and the GLT makes announces, touches base about whole class issues and on-track and then has a main presentation of some sort--speaker, whole class reflection, teacher/student activity, etc.
College Bound Behavior Lesson: lessons that help students to master basic academic skills--note taking, organization, time management, studying
Social Emotional Lesson: Lessons that address social skills or issues--internet safety, handling frustration, disagreeing appropriately, understanding sex/alcohol and drugs
SLC: Student Led Conference: Our end of semester parent conferences, led by the student lasting roughly 45 minutes. Crew teachers conduct these with their crew student and their family.
Welcome Students at the door and do a quick temperature check
Have students form a circle
Morning Greeting
Transition from the circle back to desks and begin the lesson or activity of that day
Conclude Lesson
Sophomore/Junior Crew: Seminar (silent/independent work time)
Students: Students evaluate their crew teacher once a semester. This feedback is done in a survey during CCS. Students are asked questions about their relationship with you--are they able to come to you to
Parents: Parents are asked a single question about crew teachers on their SLC Survey--how often does your crew teacher communicate with you?
EPIC Administration: Toni will observe crew. You are assessed entirely on whether or not you are following the curriculum with fidelity. She will make other notes about crew culture but this is to help you to be reflective about your practice.
Digital: Senior Crew is all digital. Students will track their grades and reflect online.
Discussion: Fridays are also discussion days. Each teacher will be responsible for planning a discussion based on a text (article, political cartoon, quick movie clip, poem, news clips, piece of art, etc.) of your choosing.
College: You will be a large part of the college conversations that will happen in May. You will sit down with parents and touch base about their child’s college choice. Ms. Hughes and the Alumni Counselor will support these meetings and prepare students for them. You will simply facilitate the meeting and pass on notes.
