Dear Mel,

I got a job for the holiday season, but I feel like I can’t keep up with my homework anymore. What do I do? - Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,

From experience, I can say that it’s easy to get caught up in too many things at once. What’s important is that you are able to maintain and juggle both tasks. Having a job is a ton of responsibility, and I’m pretty sure you knew that going into the job. It’s up to you to keep your grades up and stay on track. Anybody can do it; all you need is a push. Try making a schedule for yourself, like “at this time I will work on this” or “before/after work I will do...” Plan ahead of time so that you don’t fall behind in your life/school. I don’t think it’s impossible and you shouldn’t either.

Dear Mel,

I cannot stay awake in class for anything. How do you do it? - Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,

YIKES. Can’t help you there…. kidding, kidding. I went through a slump, too, where I felt unmotivated, but the key for me at least was to get ready. You know, like putting real clothes on and not staying in your pajamas, making yourself some breakfast, splashing cold water on your face...stuff like that. A key factor in staying awake for me is to set my alarm on my phone 30 minutes before I actually want to wake up. If I’m planning to wake up at 7:00 am, I will also put an extra alarm for 6:30 because, for me at least, it keeps me awake a bit so that when 7:00 hits I’m not so sleepy anymore. Also, I can’t stress it enough: EAT BREAKFAST!!!! When I don’t eat breakfast I’m out of it but when I do I’m hyper and ready to start the day. If you’re in the middle of class and you get tired, I suggest you go to the most uncomfortable place where you do e-learning; it will make sleeping less bearable. The more comfy you are, the more likely you are to knock out and fall asleep. Try some of these out and see what works best for you.
