Why An Environmental Agreement?

Solidarity as a benefit of the Environmental Agreement in place

If there is one word or a practice the Escazu's Agreement facilitates that would be 'Solidarity'. We merely need to look back at the labour movement (any country or jurisdiction) to verify the gains to a population when solidarity of purpose is achieved. For the environmentally sensitive then it is a tool, an important one in the battle to protect nature from the class of business with scant regard for how their activities impact nature and its services. In the bigger picture its also a critical artifice we can use to protect Climate from veering into regimes that will hurt the prospects and well-being of generations.

That said its all to easy to discount an international treaty when there are no overt examples of direct 'hurt' perpetrated against environmental defenders, something we've see so much in the Amazonian Basin for example. To prove its relevance therefore we'd want to look into the Agreements' range. And though we would never want to sideline those who did lose life or limb by opposing interests seeking access forest, river or sea, we must also reflect on the myriad circumstances where more sophisticated approaches have conspired, still does conspire, to oppress those who do not want to see unsustainable actions within those spaces. Arguably, the only thing that can function effectively against such sophistication is Law.
Legal framework has teeth even when its human representatives are not on spot. It also has teeth  when the deed contravening the order is already done.

So what excuse can a sitting government, more so one in the Caribbean have for not signing the Escazu Agreement?
If that is, its committed to delivering law and order?

Strong T&T involvement in crafting this agreement
Take the case of Trinidad and Tobago.
Passing strange... stranger still when one considers this country was a key contributor to the initial draft of the Escazu Agreement. Of course its still far too early to condemn the present government or ascribe to them intentions anything beyond noble. Let's for the moment say they are just COVID19 distracted.
This is a strange non-development but fingers are still crossed for positive output to occur.
