Day One: Death to the new global order.

Today marks the first day of the 73rd United Nations General Assembly. We're trying for a serious report on the events as they unfold over on the serious ET web but no such constraints apply here. Be warned opinions are the order of the day.

Just to place this series in context - and yes we are going to have opinions for each and every day of the GA right up to close of play October 1st, we need to keep in mind the event's theme “Making the United Nations relevant to all people: global leadership and shared responsibilities for peaceful, equitable and sustainable societies.”

Uh huh, its a diplomatic dig at ye olde Donald. Somebody in Geneva decided that the American head of state needed to be put in place. That's not so silly a position as it looks. Even though Trump may have taken a hard line against the UN early in his tenure, he's pissing in the wind. The UN can get by without him - It's America they want. And America has some pretty strong ancestral ties to other parts of the world, where let's not forget, 193 other UN members live so the wider populaton of the USA will want what the UN is promising (well, begging for).

There are other considerations for onlookers to the UN gathering this year. Some would have been wondering if the 'most powerful man on earth' was in fact victim (as he alleges) of fake news. The UN 73rd Assembly tapes throws some light on those allegations by proving Trump to be as silly as accused. And yes, it is our opinion that the general approach of all the speakers today wanted to confirm that they like the concept of the UN and yes, they planned their address albeit cirqulociously (new word) to show Donald Trump that they know he is not representative of the USA. Huge that.

Was there anything else of importance today? Actually yes. The call by UN Sec Gen Guterres that climate change is a live and direct - epochal threat to our species could not have been worded better. His other fear, that new technologies are potentially and equally dangerous (if only because advances in that quarter are not easy to regulate or do not occur in predictable sequence) is something to chew on. But one guesses the topic will be elaborated on over the next days so we'll hold of until we know more.

An underlying concern which was aired today is the acute shortage of funding. Pledges are not being fulfilled is the long story made short. No comment there, considering the plight of the global economy. Again we'd have to wait and see how the week goes on that topic. Is there any excitement to come in the week ahead? There is according to the Agenda - but for now we'll just rest and reflect that an American president is the unlikely potential breaker of the new world order. Who woulda thunk?
