Cluster 5: Photonics: Light-based Technologies in Everyday Life

Week 4

Day 1: Project day

Final Week! We had the entire day to work on our projects, which was around 6 hours in total. We also had the opportunity to tour another optics lab that works on imaging.

Day 2: Project day

We worked on projects again! Today is the last day to work on our projects before we present to our professors tomorrow. A lot of teams were rushing to finish up their projects and slides, but in the end we all made it!

Day 3: Mock Presentation Day

In the morning, Professor Sahar lectured us on wave guides and ring resonators along with how they are used in bio-sensing and communication. We then completed a virtual simulation that involved detecting a spectral shift as a result of adding particles in the ring resonator. Right before lunch, we took a quick tour of some of the solar cell labs on campus. In the afternoon, all groups had their first presentation and receivied constructive feedback from classmates, professors, and cluster assistants. Students will actively prepare for tomorrow's first formal presentation.

Day 4: Project Presentation Day

We presented to OPALS! We learned a lot about the OPALS program and about their projects. They focused on biophotonics, imaging, and machine learning. They also had a closing ceremony that inspired us to add pictures of our residential life to our slides to present to parents tomorrow. Dr. Pengyue Wen who works at intel gave us a lecture in the afternoon about semiconductors and data processing centers.
