Cluster 11: Introduction to Autonomous Vehicles

Week 2

Friday - COSMOlympics

The highlight of our Friday was, of course, our COSMOlympics skit. Led by our RA Allan as Ms. Frizzle, we put on an amazing performance of our magical school bus journey to Starbucks, followed by robbing the employees (played by our RA David and Valentino), and eventually illustrating a moral dilemma: run over a Starbucks employee, or let all of the students within the bus crash and die. With the help of our audience, the Starbucks employee, David, was sacrificed.

In the end we had proudly achieved a close 2nd place for our skit for its creativity and laughs from the audience!

The Weekend: A Break From Autonomy

Saturday - La Jolla Beach

For our first excursion during our time at COSMOS, we joyfully took a trip to La Jolla Shores. We were allowed to explore the strip of shops, play games around the beach and grass area, and swim in the ocean.  We had a great time with our fantastic Resident Assistants, David and Allan!

Monday - Driving Cars Like Donkeys

On Monday, Moises helped each group begin to set up the DonkeyCar simulator, allowing each group to start doing laps to train the simulation. Additionally, teams were given time to work on their robots and finish up CADing. This would be our first taste of the DonkeyCar simulator, as we began to get comfortable with the AI module system.

Tuesday - A Long Day...

In the morning, we attended a Zoom presentation where  Assistant Professor Benjamin Smarr discussed his research in in health and data science. Later, we made a visit to the library to do some work on the ethics essay. After coming back from lunch, we continued our work on getting the DonkeyCar Simulator to function and accelerated our wiring on the cars.

Wednesday - Troubleshooting Our Issues

Today was a frustrating day-- we all were struggling.

On Wednesday, teams continued to put the electronics for their car together and printed various parts for the car, putting the 3D printers to work. But, we spent most of the day focused on setting up the Jetson Nano for our vehicle in order to get ready for the lake on Friday, putting a pause on the DonkeySim for now.

What do you think of the food?

Team 5 - Lauren Chu

"The food is better than I thought coming here, but, it gets a bit repetitive. Meat, rice, and chicken everyday..."

What do you look forward to seeing from your students?

Our teacher fellow, Robert Day

"I like seeing a good attitude and a love for learning, and I appreciate when people care about each other. My favorite thing about working with all you COSMOnauts is your creativity and passion for what you do!"
