FACT: Cardiovascular disease, or CVD, is the leading global cause of death.

Thus, there is a desire to understand the mechanical differences between normal and myopathic hearts to potentially find a way to treat CVD. The biomechanics of cardiomyocytes is best understood through subcellular heart tissue structure analysis, which is only possible on the nanoscale level.

Problem Statement: There is currently no technology that allows for the efficient culturing of hiPSC-CMs to align on substrates for the purposes of recording nanoscale measurements of anisotropically aligned human cardiomyocytes using x-ray diffraction imaging*.

The design team* presented the culmination of their work at Bioengineering Day 2022, a poster expo designed to showcase the projects of all senior students in the Bioengineering department. Attendees included students from the University of California San Diego (UCSD), alumni of UCSD, faculty members, and industry experts. The project poster reflects the content that was discussed by all team members at Bioengineering Day and is a concise summary of the design as a whole.
