Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Fabricating simplified first prototype in machine shop using EDM
Received shipment of simulated bone (Sawbones)
Continuing to make changes on design
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Performed insertion tests into Jello with multiple design iterations
Began fabrication of simplified prototype
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives
Finalize design
Finalize/Analyze simplified prototype
Fabricate scaled version out of metal (titanium), with more detail than simplified prototype
Change final scale of part to 2x scale
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
Good improvement on the deployment test
The wings deployed in a way that created more contact with their surface area
Keep looking to see if the design can be made with peek
3 Different types of test (can be done with different iterations of the anchor):
1) test in Jello to show deployment motion
2) test already deployed shape in sawbones with instron machine
3) test final iteration: insert anchor into sawbones, then test with instron machine
Slightly concerned about sharp corners and how they interact with the suture in the simplified anchor assembly
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
Look into methods of precision machining
Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS/DMP) is likely the best option
Quote is still underway
Selective Laser Sintering
Complex Geometries
Have only seen nylon materials for manufacture; unknown if PEEK is an option
ED Machining
Needed simplified CAD model of part
Currently being manufactured
Risks and Areas of Concern
Ineffective prototypes
Will cause more delays in design
Dimensioning and scaling of anchor
1.4mm diameter is too small. 2X scale is still competitive.
Product specs of anchors that are posted online may not be accurate.
Resources or Information Required but not Available
Cadavers
Porosity size of bone
Method of machining prototype (still determining how to drill suture holes)
Type of drilled hole for soft anchors (clearance or smaller hole where they shove in the inserter?)
Schedule
Manufacture anchor out of steel or titanium
Budget (list amount spent and amount remaining)
$240 spent
$860 remaining
