Explain why the use of 2 blades instead of 1.
Two blades enable the user to make precise cuts in a cross-section type fashion (specifically taking samples from eyeballs).
What surgical applications?
Our sponsors work in pathology, and this project’s primary function will be in preparing samples for pathology purposes.
Why is this project important?
If successful, this project will allow for the safer and more precise grossing of eyeballs, a previously difficult task due to the unique structure of the tissue. The samples produced by our scalpel will help pathologists to better study the tissue for disease and pathogens.
Oral explanation needs visual representation.
The media (pictures and video) used in this presentation were taken from the actual grossing room with our sponsor volunteering to demonstrate the old prototype from a previous MAE 156B group.
What is the project objective?
To produce a safe, durable, easy to use and assemble/disassemble scalpel for the purpose of making precise cross sectional cuts of various tissues for further study by pathology.
Bring 3-4 concepts of possible designs.
