Folding Wall Mechanism
Possible Design Choices:
1. Sliding Wall
Comments
does not achieve 75% volume reduction
heaviest design
stronger relative to other possible design solutions (Maximum stress is 12.3 MPa)
2. Scissor Lift
Comments
panels are to be inserted in between the columns
achieve 80% volume reduction
manual removal of panels would be troublesome
not strong enough (maximum stress is 133 MPa)
3. Horizontal Folding Wall
Comments
horizontal folding mechanism
achieve 75% volume reduction
easy to collapse
experiences stress that is greater than its yield strength (maximum stress is 4.815 GPa)
not strong enough (large deformation occurs)
4. Two bi-folding Walls
Comments
vertical version of the folding wall mechanism with two bi-folding walls
achieve 75% volume reduction
need to add support columns on the ceiling for reinforcement when extended
too much overhang when collapsed, which results in large deformation (8.9 cm) due to 2G vertical force
5. Final Design (One Single-folding Wall and one Bi-folding Wall)
