Week 2
Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Tests of the system cannot be done until the plumbing in Dr. Kleissl's Lab, Warren Lecture Hall 2214, has been finished.
We are still waiting for Facilities Management at UCSD to allow us access to the plumbing system in our lab.
Need to map out how much material will be used in connecting the water tanks and heat pumps.
The points of interest in which the sensors will be connected to the heat pump and the water tanks have been designated.
Hand written theoretical analysis of the system has been done and verified.
Need to start on creating a CAD model of our project.
A Matlab or Labview model of the system is being researched. (WOW factor)
Accomplishments from Previous Week
The points of interest in which the sensors will be connected to the heat pump and the water tanks have been designated. (Chris, Sean, Cara)
Secured a workspace for the project. (Xavier, Nadim)
Met with Facilities Management and discussed how the plumbing would work. (Team Effort)
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Following up as to when our grant money will come through so that we can get the sensors/access to plumbing. (Nadim, Chris)
Continue following up with our request to Facilities Management to see if we can get a date on when they will give us access to the plumbing system. (Xavier, Nadim)
Continue updating the website. (Sean, Cara)
Starting the report, specifically our introduction, abstract, and objectives. (Team Effort)
Research for a Labview/Matlab model. (Xavier, Cara, Nadim)
Continue following up with Dr. Kleissl on the grants. (Nadim, Sean, Chris)
Start a CAD model of our project. (Team Effort)
Do design proposal presentation. (Team Effort)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
Our sponsor, Hal Slater, had come with us to look at possible sites for the experiment to take place. The first site we were taken to was at Vaughen Hall at Scripps Institute of Oceanography in a mechanical space on the third floor at the request of Facilities Management. Hal did not like the space because it was very small, the experiment data would be skewed because there would be an unknown amount of cold/hot water flowing in/out of the systems, the water temperatures we needed were inaccessible, and the site was not very accessible. We then asked Facilities if we could look at Dr. Kleissl's lab space, Warren Lecture Hall 2214, and met last Friday, January 13. He liked the lab space because we could control the amount/temperature of the water being used and had enough lab space for us to work in.
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
Asked us to add more detail to the progress reports and names to the tasks. As a result we added more detail and names.
Changed units from English to metric.
Risks and Areas of Concern
The grant processing for the work order for when we want to spend money on parts/labor takes an unknown amount of time. It could take a matter of days to weeks in order for the grant to be processed and the money to come to us.
We need to have our sensors come in order to perform testing, but due to the grant request process, we do not know when that will occur.
We need to be able to get access to the plumbing system but due to the grant request process as well Facilities Management, we do not know when that will occur.
Resources or Information Required but not Available
When access to the plumbing will be given to us.
When the grant requests will go through.
Schedule
Get plumbing done before the end of January. (Facilities Management)
Set up project by end of January/ beginning of February. (Team Effort)
Have a Matlab/Labview model before the end of project. (WOW factor)
Have abstract, introduction, and objectives done by the end of January. (Team Effort)
Have design presentation done by next week. (Team Effort)
Budget (list amount spent and amount remaining)
$1881 + tax + shipping (sensors)
Heat Pump (purchased by sponsor)
Water Tanks (purchased by sponsor)
Work order to Facilities Management (unknown amount)
Above $12,000 remaining on budget not including work order for Facilities Management.
Progress on Report and Webpage
We have began updating the website, and our in process of compiling our data that we had from dropbox and putting it on the website. (Sean)
Keep up with weekly updates. (Team Effort)
