Tropospheric ozone is both: a pollutant and a greenhouse gas. Therefore, tropospheric ozone plays a key role in atmospheric radiative transfer, oxidation processes and air quality, and its increase in the troposphere enhances the greenhouse effect. Ozone is transported from the stratosphere to the troposphere and is also formed by the oxidation of carbon compounds ("photochemical smog"), which is catalysed and controlled by nitrogen oxides. Satellite measurements can be extremely useful to obtain consistent information on tropospheric ozone concentrations over large areas and over long periods of time, to provide information on its sources, sinks and global and regional trends.
Consequently, the tropospheric ozone retrieval method based on satellite data needs to be continuously improved and validated.
