Did you know that polar bears are excellent swimmers? Polar bears are known to swim up to 10 kilometers per hour and over 90 kilometers without stopping. They can hold their breath underwater for more than a minute because a polar bear's nostrils close underwater.
Polar bears are the largest bears as well as the largest land carnivores in the world. Males can weigh between 800 and 1300 pounds. Females are normally smaller and weigh between 300 and 700 pounds, but they can easily weigh up to 1100 pounds when pregnant.
Males measure between 7.9 feet and 9.8 feet in length. Females are shorter and measure between 5.9 and 7.9 feet.
