Motion Path Ride - 3/19/2019
I decided to animate a motion path ride of Kingda Ka, a launching steel roller coaster at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey. Kingda Ka is the tallest roller coaster in the world and the second fastest roller coaster in the world. My model and animation doesn't quite do its sheer size and speed justice but I attempted to recreate as well as I could.
Here is a (crudely drawn) storyboard of my animation. My final animation followed my storyboard fairly closely.
I used pose-to-pose animation in order to create the corkscrew track and associated camera movements.
I used anticipation by holding the ride at the start for a few seconds, which is used in order to build up excitement for the ride's launch.
I staged the scene so the viewer is initially unaware of how tall the coaster is until the ride is started and the coaster is launched.
