In this project, I created a model of a treasure chest based on a reference image and put a very special treasure inside (a king's crown!).
The Model
For this project, I really wanted to focus on creating depth and texture. I chose a reference image with really pronounced wood graining, thin sheet metal, and haphazardly placed rivets and tried to replicate that in my model.
I built a low poly model from scratch and then designed a texture map and bump map in Photoshop. I then imported those maps into Maya to give the model depth and texture in a manner that would be reactive to the light and could be more detailed than I could achieve with polygons. Inside the treasure chest is a king's crown (crown model is discussed below).
I had hoped to have time to add more details, but due to some personal matters (my grandpa passed away), I wasn't able to do so. Still, I'm quite happy with the detailed result I was able to produce.

Highlighting the thin sheet metal, "handplaced" rivets, wood graining, and keyhole.
This was achieved with using a combination of texture mapping and bump mapping (and lots of time in Photoshop).
A glimpse of the treasure within the treasure chest. The crown is actually magical and floats up when the chest opens!
The model of the crown was created by printable_models and posted to free3d.com. It is available for personal use.
For some reason, I could not make the bump map appear in the Playblast. Only in the editor and in renders. This is why the treasure chest in the video appears darker and flatter.
