In this short animation, a lonely cannon plays a game of catch with itself in the storeroom.
I squashed and stretched the cannonball as it flew through the air. This made a huge difference in how the animation looked. The whole scene became much more natural.
I used PTP animation to animate the ball and the cannon. Below is an example of the two starting keyframes from the cannonball's first flight. It's first keyframe is in the cannon and the last keyframe (for this flight) is when it hits the wall. I then went in and edited the in-between frames that were generated to smooth out the animation.
Since the cannon is the main character of the animation, I put him in the center-left of the shot. This gave the cannon the main attention but also left enough room to see the ball hit the wall.
I used Slow In and Slow Out and Arcs to animate the flight of the ball. In this example, as the ball falls after hitting the wall, it speeds up as it falls. The ball also falls in an arc shape.
