Course Descriptions
Descriptions of all VCCS courses are available in the VCCS Master Course File, which is updated within a couple months of the approval by the VCCS Dean's Course Review Committee. Transfer Virginia courses include a detailed outline and a statewide designation statement.

Implementation Semester and Courses Being Phased Out
The Approved Transfer Virginia courses spreadsheet (located under "Transfer Virginia Course Information" heading) shows DCRC-approved courses with implementation semester, as well as courses being phased out and replaced by TVA courses. This spreadsheet is accessible only to VCCS staff. You may be prompted to log in to Sharepoint / VCCS Intranet to access this document.
Adding New Courses to Passport or UCGS Roster
The Passport and UCGS course rosters are maintained by SCHEV. Each course on those rosters has gone through a comprehensive review process within the State Committee on Transfer. Updated Passport and UCGS lists are maintained on SCHEV's transfer policy documents. The Request for Addition of Course to Passport or Uniform Certificate of General Studies Course (UCGS) Roster, including a description of the process, is located there as well.
The Uniform Certificate of General Studies (UCGS) is a one-year college program in which all courses are transferable and satisfy lower-division general education requirements at any Virginia public institution of higher education and many private institutions. To satisfy the UCGS, students are required to complete the a total of 10 courses distributed through the seven block. Students are advised to take the UCGS course that best suits their intended program of study at the four-year institution.
The Passport is a college program in which all courses are transferable and satisfy lower-division general education requirements at any Virginia public institution of higher education and many private institutions. The Passport consists of course blocks assigned specific courses. To satisfy the Passport students are required to complete five courses distributed through different course blocks.
SCHEV's State Policy on College Transfer provides a variety of important information like definitions of key terms and admissions for dual enrollment.
One important policy is on the acceptance of online labs (as addressed below): For students completing online courses at a public two-year Virginia college prior to transfer, the two-year and four-year institutions will accept and apply the course work for all subject areas, including lab sciences, toward meeting general education requirements. Students majoring in the natural sciences may be required to complete in-person labs for lower division science courses.
