In preparation for Beginning Band, students are introduced to the band starter instruments during the Spring Semester of the 4th grade in their General Music Class. In April and May of 4th Grade, students take a Music Aptitude Test and are interviewed individually to be fitted for an instrument.
While some families own their child's instrument, most families begin by renting. We suggest renting first prior to buying. If you are interested in buying an instrument for your child, please contact your child's band teacher first to ensure that it is a quality instrument. An informational meeting and a rental night are held for 5th grade students and parents when school starts in August.
In 5th grade, students will learn fundamental music skills such as new rhythms, notes, and musical symbols, all while having fun on their instruments. Also, all 5th grade band members perform in two concerts during the school year.
To prepare for these exciting performances, we meet once a week during school for small group lessons on our instruments. Students in 5th grade beginning band use the Tradition of Excellence, Book 1.
Daily practice at home is very important for your student’s success. It is recommended that students practice 20 - 30 minutes a day at home. A designated practice area should include a chair and music stand. Parental support and encouragement is critical during the beginning years of study on a musical instrument.
Junior High Band students in grades 6, 7 and 8 meet during the elective period. Sectionals also meet during JH Lunch Study Hall. During the first trimester, the band continues to study in the Tradition of Excellence, Books 1 and 2. We also work on the School Song and the Star Spangled Banner. Band supplies, such as reeds, valve oil and sticks are available. Please contact Mr. Dooley about these items.
The Junior High Band performs annually at two formal concerts and Graduation. Junior High band students also have the opportunity to study solos and small ensemble music to perform at contests or recitals. The Junior High Band also performs at selected assemblies and community events. We also participate in IESA Solo and Ensemble contest.
