Academic Intervention Services

AIS Reading

Academic Intervention Services (AIS) are provided for students who are reading below grade level. Throughout the school year, classroom teachers and Reading Specialists assess each reader to determine their reading level. If it is determined that a student is reading below the grade level, the AIS Reading Specialists will provide additional reading instruction to the identified students during the school day. The AIS Reading Specialists work closely with the classroom teachers and administrators to develop an individualized reading plan that targets each students specific strengths and weaknesses in reading. The AIS Reading Specialists and classroom teachers will continue to work closely on implementing each student's plan in order to ensure that each student is making progress.

AIS Math

AIS Math is instruction designed to work on a student's weaknesses in the mathematics classroom. The goals of the AIS math teacher are to identify and strengthen the student's weaknesses in math and to help the student be successful in their regular classroom. The AIS teacher uses manipulatives and/or games to reinforce and practice basic skills and concepts. In addition, students also review and practice problem solving strategies and use real life situations that require the use of math skills.

What determines a student's need for AIS services?

A variety of criteria are used to determine which students will be included in the AIS math program. The goal of the program at this stage is to provide students, who may not be able to reach standards on their own, the skills that will help them do so in the future.

Multiple measures are used to determine if your child needs AIS:

  • Student assessments, including iReady Math and Listening to Learn

  • Key fluency goals by grade levels

  • Anecdotal notes

  • Teacher recommendation
