Curriculum

Early Years Foundation Stage At Elm Road School:

the Early Years Curriculum is very much a mixture of teacher led and child initiated learning. What does this mean?.... although we will of course teach your child what we want them to learn, we also give the children opportunities to direct their own learning through providing opportunities for investigation and exploration in their play. We want the children to become creative thinkers and learners. We will plan activities and experiences that promote children's development and learning based on the ‘Development Matters’ in the Early Years Foundation Stage. For further information on our Early Years Curriculum please visit our EYFS class page.

Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2:

At Elm Road we offer a topic based curriculum where links are made between foundation and core subjects with an emphasis on developing key skills and knowledge. Literacy and mathematical skills are applied and developed throughout the curriculum. We follow the mastery curriculum in maths and use the White Rose Hub materials. We use phonics as part of our literacy curriculum, following the scheme ‘Letters and Sounds’ In Foundation stage ‘Jolly Phonics Program’ complements ‘Letters and Sounds’ We also use a range of reading books that complement each other, including Oxford Reading Tree and Project X. We aim to provide exciting learning opportunities that include practical experiences so that the children are engaged and challenged. The opportunities that we provide are matched to the pupils’ ability and stage of learning. Children are taught through a range of teaching methods i.e. whole class teaching, group work and individual work. Children will bring home reading books to share with their family and homework including spellings. The homework is designed to further extend the children’s knowledge of what they have been learning in school. We want parents to feel involved and part of their child’s education and welcome them into school where we can share more information on our curriculum.
