Through my education at Elmira College and in my experience at the group home, I have learned how to effectively communicate with patients in a variety of emotional states. I've been able to apply active listening, conflict resolution, and knowledge application in my experiences at the group home and clinicals.
In a variety of settings, I have needed to apply my critical thinking skills in order to provide optimal care. When working with adults with developmetal disabilities, you never know how the shift is going to go, and when an obstacle arises, critical thinking is an important skill in order to come to a resolution while still maintaining safety and efficiency.
When working with people, I am able to provide a hopeful outlook and a positive attitude in order to promote a therapeutic environment. Patience is required when working with all patients, and especially those with disabilities. I have been able to improve my patience in my two years working in the group home, as well as working with acute care patients in the hospital.
