Using GenAI Tools to Develop POG Durable Skills

Interactive Introduction: After providing an overview of the North Carolina Portrait of a Graduate (POG) and its emphasis on durable skills, participants will be prompted to discuss in small groups how they currently see these skills being developed in their schools. They will then share examples with the larger group using a collaborative digital platform like or Canva Whiteboard fostering immediate engagement. Hands-on Exploration of GenAI Tools: The presenter will offer a live demonstration of various GenAI tools and encourage participants to try these tools on their own devices. To deepen understanding, participants will work in pairs or small groups to explore how a specific GenAI tool could be used to develop a particular durable skill, such as critical thinking or communication. Each group will then present their findings and ideas to the rest of the participants. Collaborative Implementation Planning: During the discussion on best practices for integrating GenAI tools into existing curricula, participants will work in teams to brainstorm and design a lesson or unit plan that incorporates GenAI to develop durable skills. Using provided templates, they will share their ideas with the group for feedback and refinement.

High Leverage Practices for Students with Disabilities: Scaffolded Instruction

Educators will appraise their current implementation of HLPs using the HLP Self-Assessment Tool. A variety of resources and examples will then be explored for educators to improve their use of High Leverage Practices across all classroom settings. During this session participants will discuss effective strategies to address common classroom challenges and enhance student learning including: 1) Creating a positive and engaging classroom environment: Focusing on physical and emotional factors. 2) Establishing clear routines and procedures: Maximizing instructional time and minimizing disruptions. 3) Addressing common classroom management challenges: Proactive and reactive strategies for dealing with off-task behavior and disruptive behavior. 4) The power of positive reinforcement: Utilizing praise, rewards, and encouragement to motivate students.5) De-escalating strategies to use in the classroom when students need support with regulating their emotions.
