At SILC we offer drop in class meets for all of our middle school math classes. During these meets students are given the opportunity to ask questions and solidify their understanding of the math concepts covered. It also is a fantastic opportunity to interact with their teacher and meet their classmates! There are interactive graphics and tools embedded throughout the course modules which students can fiddle with to improve their understanding of many math concepts. We also promote the use of math manipulatives - such as algebra tiles, integer chips, fraction strips and fraction tiles throughout the lessons. If students don't have access to these manipulatives at home, students are provided with access to these math tools online.
Operations with Decimals & Percents
In this unit, learn about how to work with decimals, order of operations, and how to convert between decimals and percents.
Comparing and Ordering Numbers & Adding and Subtracting Fractions
In this unit learn about ordering decimals, fractions and numbers. Learn to work with fraction strips, then number lines and then be able to add and subtract fractions symbolically.
Divisibility and Introduction to Integers & Adding and Subtracting Integers
In this unit, learn about integers and their importance in everyday life. Learn how to add and subtract integers - first using integer chips, then number lines, then symbolically.
Chance and Uncertainty & Data Analysis
In this unit, learn about probability, independent and dependent events. Work to analyze data and find the mean, median and mode of any given data set. Identify outliers in data sets and understand when to include them in calculations.
Expressions and Relations & Graphing Linear Relations
In this unit, learn about linear expressions and relations. Learn about the Cartesian Plane, and create your own graphs on a Cartesian Plane. Create tables of value, plot points and figure out relations based on just a few pieces of information.
Introduction to Equations & Solving Equations
In this unit, learn about the differences between expressions and equations. Then, learn to solve one-step equations using algebra tiles and then algebraically.
Understanding Circles & Area of Parallelograms, Triangles and Circles
In this unit, learn about characteristics of circles, such as diameter, radius and circumference. Learn about how to find the area of circles, triangles, parallelograms and other shapes.
Geometric Constructs and Transformations
In this unit, learn about parallel and perpendicular lines. Also, learn about transformations such as translations, reflections and rotations.
Integers
In this unit, build on your knowledge of working with negative numbers. Learn how to multiply and divide integers concretely using integer chips, pictorially using number lines, and then symbolically. Also learn about order of operations in this unit.
Fractions
In this unit, learn about multiplying and dividing fractions. Learn to use lots of manipulatives and tools (like paper folding, fraction strips and online tools) to help understand multiplying and dividing whole numbers, mixed numbers, improper fractions and proper fractions.
Ratios and Rates & Percents
In this unit, learn about proportional reasoning, ratios, rates and unit rates (and their importance in our everyday lives). Also learn about converting between fractions, decimals and percents.
Square Roots and Pythagorean Theorem
In this unit, learn about perfect and imperfect squares. Learn about the relationship between squaring something and taking the square root of it. Also, learn about the Pythagorean Theorem and use it to determine a missing side of a right triangle, or to determine what is a right triangle.
Linear Relations and Linear Equations
In this unit, learn how to solve one-step and two-step equations to find an unknown value. Also, learn about the distributive property, creating a table of values and graphing linear relations.
Surface Area and Volume
In this unit, learn about the nets of 3D objects. Also learn about how to find the surface area and volume of triangular prisms, rectangular prisms, cubes and cylinders.
Statistics and Probability & 3D Views and Congruent Polygons
In this unit, learn about experimental probability, theoretical probability and representing data on a graph. Also learn about transformations and congruency of polygons.
