The Never Changing God
I remember hearing for the first time the theory that God has evolved. I was stunned. How could this eternal omniscient, omnipotent God evolve? When you consider what evolving entails usually means that you got better or worse, that you changed or you became more accustomed to your environment. God is and always has been perfect.
However, many people who read the Old Testament see a different kind of God than the God that we see in the New Testament and since we believe that it is that the same God they see this as logical. After listening for a short while to Father Mike Schmitz podcast "The Bible in a year," I have been reflecting further on this. I've come to realize that it is not God who has changed, it is his people. God has had to reveal himself to us based on where we are at. Think about it as a Father, as He is our Heavenly Father. A father does not treat every child the same. Sometimes it is the age of the child that requires him to speak differently. Sometimes it's the habits of the child. He may have to be more disciplinary. We as a people have changed and are constantly changing and God seeks us where we're at.
I have also heard it said that the Jewish people worship a different God then we as Christians. I will again state God is never changing. Although the Jewish people do not acknowledge the trinity to say that they do not worship the same God would again be an equal argument to the idea that God changes. God the one true God has been the Trinity since the beginning of time and therefore was always the God that the Jewish people worship(ed).
God is eternal. God is eternally merciful, just, and loving. God is eternally Father, Son and Holy Spirit. God is never changing.
