The Amethyst Waltz
By Danica Pauleen Pimentel
Short Story Background Info:
Princess Deoth of Kover was gifted a rare amethyst that has magical properties. Power, wealth, and health. Her enemy, prince Edric of her neighboring kingdom, Clover, wants the necklace for himself. So, Edric arranged a party just for her but has masked it by calling it a “royal gathering”. The Princess knows what tricks Prince Edric is going to pull. Princess Deoth will not let him take the necklace away. -----
POV: Princess Deoth
-----
I arrive and the first person to talk to me is my stomach.
I want something sweet...
“Hmm...I will try some of the toffee cake” I say as I walk over to the table.
This party really is something. Then again, it is the kingdom of Clover, the grandest kingdom on the continent.
I don’t understand why Prince Edric wants this necklace. He already has so much power and wealth. Ever since we were younger he has always had wealth. As we got older he gained power.
“That greedy Prince.”, I say as I roll my eyes.
I sigh and stuff my face with cake.
“Mmm! This is delicious.”, I muffled.
“Well I am glad you enjoy it my dear.~”, Edric says
Where did he come from? He just popped out of no where.
“Edric...I was wondering when you would show your smug face to me. About time isn’t it?”, I say as I chuckle.
“Well Deo, you have finally come to a royal gathering that I hosted. Guess it was about time huh?” I sigh.
“Edric. Always trying to get the last laugh yet you fail time and time again.”, I scoff.
“Ahem- Well nevermind that.”, Prince Edric says, obviously embarrassed.
“Princess Deoth, would you please put down the cake and have the first dance with me~?”, Edric says slyfully.
“Hmm…”
I think to myself.
It’s the trap set up for me. Edric, you think you're so sly. Well let's test to see if you can finally take it this time.
Let’s just see how much he’ll last until he gives up.
“I would love to. Your Highness~”, I reply.

The lights dim.
The music starts.
The spotlight is on us.
All eyes are directed towards Edric and I.
We bow and curtsy.
We hold hands and get into our positions.
We waltz.
As we gracefully circle the room, Edric spins me.
“Hmm...Princess. It seems that you have practiced since the last time we have waltzed together.” “Ha! You were tripping all over the place the last time we have practiced waltzing.” I scoff.
I see him staring at the necklace. I spin my entire body against the light so he will get more tempted to take the necklace.
“Watch where you are looking, Edric.”
He gets flustered.
“Uh- apologies princess.”
“We are waltzing for the necklace again. Aren't we? You can not fool me."
“You are a clever one, Deo, but you are not quick.”
He twirls me around quickly. He wants my hair to block my vision.
I elegantly put the back of my hand under my hair as he twirls me and I smirk. “Tsk.”
“Indeed I am not quick, but like you said, I am clever. I know your tricks Edric.” He pulls me closer, then moves my hair as we glide across the room, and whispers…
“They say keep your friends close but keep your enemies closer.”
“I win Deo.”
I gently grab his forearm with my right hand while we are still in motion and slide my hand up to his. I move my left hand to his neck to hold the behind of his head and whisper in his ear…
“No Edric. I win~”
I grab the necklace from his hand. He lets go of the necklace and admits defeat...this time.
The song ends and we bow and curtsey to each other.
-----
I put on the necklace as I walk away back to my chair.
“Princess Deoth.”
“Yes Edric dear~?” I say as I knowingly won.
I tauntingly look at him and he steps forward. He moves my hair to take one last look at the necklace. He laughs and says...
“You have won this time my dear, but the next you won’t.”
I taunt.
“No Edric, there won’t be a next time.”
He let's go of my hair and I walk out of the castle to head on back to Kover.

POV: Deoth and Edric
-----
“Even if there is a next time...I will win.”
“Even if there is a next time...I will win.”
They grin slyly at the thought of their opponent losing and end the night.
