P.E.-
5th Grade:
We have been hooping it up in 5th grade PE class! Students have been working on dribbling, passing and shooting in various games over the past few weeks. Students have also been challenged to work on basic ball handling skills in our daily warmup. Students will end the unit in a mini 4v4 basketball tournament. It is my sincere hope that all students will be able to start and play their own pickup games at recess, so we focus on students being able to play fairly and referee their own games and solving conflicts on their own as they arise. We also talk a lot about what it means to play for the fun of it! We are off to a great start in 2023!
Art -
In the art room this month fifth graders continue to create their “alebrijes”; Mexican folk art sculptures. We discovered many students already knew a little about alebrijes from the popular movie, CoCo. Students learned a little history about these fantastical creatures, been building armatures with recyclable materials, paper macheing and lastly painting our creatures with bright colors and details. Next, Winter Park Ski Resort has invited us to be included in a Ski Safety Poster Contest. All 4th and 5th graders will be included in this project. In art I will introduce some basic graphic design elements as I get all students started on their Ski Safety posters. I’m excited to have this opportunity to connect with our local community.
Just an FYI….most of your child’s artwork will stay at school. Students' artwork is displayed around the school and then kept in their art portfolios. In May, students will review all their artwork and select the one piece they are most proud of to display at the FVE Student Art Show at the Fraser Valley Public Library, exact dates to be determined.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

March-2023 Recorder concert Grades 3-5
RECORDERS ARE HERE!
Due to COVID, we have been unable to learn recorder up until this year! We have started off strong with a pre-test and learning the first three notes. B, A, and G.
If you have ordered a recorder from me, recorders and books have been passed out to the students who have been at school.
I have instructed the students that recorders are not to be played anywhere but in my classroom and at home. I am writing their names on the bags so we can identify them.
Recorders should be brought to school on our return to school in January. We will begin learning then, however here are some reminders and pointers for your student to have successful play and practice at home.
Left hand should be on top, with the right hand on bottom.
The left thumb goes on the hole in the back, with the index, middle and ring fingers going on the front first three holes. The right index, middle, ring and pinky will be used on the bottom four holes.
The pads, or cushions of the fingers should be used to cover the holes.
Air flow into the recorder should be slow and hot, as if you were fogging up a window or making a candle flicker.
If you would like to buy a recorder, I did order a few extras, so please let me know.
