1st Grade

P.E.-

First Grade:   

We have really been hooping it up in first grade PE class! We have  been focusing on the fundamentals of basketball.  Students work on improving their dribbling skills, shooting skills, and passing skills in various games and stations. In shooting we focus on creating a capital letter L and a capital letter I with our shooting arm and then waving bye bye to the ball for our follow through each time we shoot. Students are also working on improving hand eye coordination as we practice several different ball handling skills each day. Our first grade students are really becoming hoop-stars! ;-)

Art -

In the art room this month first graders are continuing to work on their treasure jars that they created before break.  The jars are made out of recycled paper.  Most students had fun shaping and creating their jar with the slimy paper and glue mixture.  Students painted their jars as well as added some details with fancy metallic paints to make them extra special for their treasures.   

Just an FYI….most of your child’s artwork will stay at school.  Students' artwork is displayed around the school and then kept in their art portfolios.  In May, students will review all their artwork and select the one piece they are most proud of to display at the FVE Student Art Show at the Fraser Valley Public Library, exact dates to be determined.

First Grade is learning about steady beat, body control, creative movement, and the differences between loud and soft, fast and slow, and high and low. We are also learning some fun songs and non-pitched percussion instruments. 

Some of the songs we are learning are Charlie over the Ocean, Tongo, I have lost my closet key, These are mother's knives and forks, Did you ever see a lassie, The Crabfish, Risseldy Rosseldy, Johnny Works with One Hammer, Kitty Alone, Momma Buy Me A China Doll, and so many more!

We will be reading Books like The Loud Book, The Quiet Book, The Bremen Town Musicians, Say Zoop, We Will Rock Our Classmates, Carnival of The Animals, From Head to Toe, and many others!
