STUDENT LIFE

No question, East Grand Rapids High School is unique among public schools in Western Michigan. But, what makes it unique?

  • East Grand Rapids is a suburban residential community with no industry or major business.

  • East is a land-locked community, one square mile in size. Housing is well-established and residents stay long after their children leave the school system.

  • Students walk or drive to school. The district owns only enough buses to transport special needs students and athletic teams.

  • The high school maintains an open campus. Students are free to come and go at-will throughout the day. There are no guards and no restrictions on students, provided they act as responsible citizens.

  • The schools in East are the center of focus for the community. It is commonplace to have 4,000 fans in the stands at a Friday night home football game, including young families who walk to the game, pushing their children in strollers.

  • Community members walk, stroll or run the paths around Reeds Lake, in the center of the community, where children play in the adjacent park or take their first sailing lesson.
