Choose 1 elective from the ARTISTIC & PRACTICAL ELECTIVES group (AE) and 1 elective from the OTHER ELECTIVES group (OE).
Students who study Spanish, French or German only choose 1 ARTISTIC & PRACTICAL ELECTIVE (AE). Students studying A2 Swedish choose two electives similarly to students who do not have an elective language. A2 Swedish does not count in the elective subjects quota.
All 8th Grade elective subjects are assessed with a number grade. The final grade for the artistic and practical subject studied as an elective is given only at the end of 9th Grade.
Crafts (AE)

In this elective students will get a chance to try out their creativity in a practical way. We will use different materials and techniques to make unique pieces of functional work.

In this elective you can choose what sort of music you would like to make. We can write your own songs, record with professional equipment and even make a video to go with it.
You might want to make a rap or electronic music, or simply a ballad with voice, piano and / or ukulele, or just play in a band. Bring your ideas and we can help make it a reality!
Art (AE)

Develop visual thinking, problem solving skills, dexterity and perseverance.
Students learn about art in different cultures, art history, contemporary art and topical phenomena in visual culture in our society. We also study the basics of design, architecture and environmental art. We work with versatile materials and techniques, such as drawing, painting, sculpting and building, printing, collage, digital tools etc. Each medium is approached from an environmental perspective to help the students learn sustainable and sensible ways to use materials and care for tools.
Students get to develop their individual artistic expression through a variety of projects which encourage experimentation and playfulness. Starting points for projects vary from imagination to observation and precise planning to coincidence.
When possible, we visit exhibitions and participate in extracurricular art projects.
The grade is affected by both the working process and the finished projects.
Home Economics (AE)

In 8th grade, you will learn about Finnish and European food culture. You will also learn to plan and organise a party.
In 9th grade, you will explore food cuisines worldwide and learn more about different food cultures.
The practical work in Home Economics is done both independently and together, and it develops cooperation skills, practical skills, know-how, creativity and responsibility. The Home Economics elective will strengthen students' consumer skills and deepen the perception of sustainable choices in everyday life.
Spanish (OE)

To be able to talk with others about daily life in Spanish and to order food in a cafeteria or a restaurant in Spanish
To know the basics about Spanish-speaking countries and their culture - and survive in the Spanish-speaking world!

Bonjour! Ça va? Learn the basics of French by speaking, through drama, playing games etc. This course will focus on the communication skills and how to get by in everyday life situations in French. Students! Are you interested in watching movies? Film History elective is for you then! We will study movies from the early days of silent movies to the modern times of superhero blockbusters. Drama and Public Speaking (OE)

During this elective we will be having fun while practicing various acting and speaking activities. Students will gain confidence to speak and perform in front of an audience. Speeches will be given in front of a small group of our class or the whole class if the student feels confident to try, and a drama performance will be given to the student audience we decide on together.
Economics and Entrepreneurship (OE)

You would get an opportunity to participate in a Regional level Robotic Competition.
You will be learning problem solving and reasoning skills as you advance in your studies.
It’s a project based study where you would get a chance to work on many different projects.
You would also develop your team working skills which would be quite useful later in your working life.
We would use Chromebooks and Mindstorm applications to write the program and pseudocode. We would start with Visual coding; once you have grasped the basics of programming, we would move on to Text programming.

Students learn about visual culture in our society beyond the traditional fine arts. Each medium is approached from an environmental perspective to help the students learn sustainable and sensible ways to use materials and care for tools.

TEPPO (OE)
Students participating in the TEPPO-program (Work-life based teaching) will have TEPPO as their other elective subject. Students undertake one or two week long work placements for a total of 5-6 weeks during the school year. Note that there is a separate application for TEPPO done on Wilma.
Outcomes:
Students will learn working life skills, time management, and other life coping skills. They will get time to look for TEPPO work placements and practice for possible interviews, etc.
