In Respectful Relationships this term, the grade 1s are learning about their personal strengths and how we use them in day to day life.
At home, you could ask your child:
What strengths did you use at school today?
What strength did you need in your (sport) game?
What strength did the character in this story show?
Regulation is something everyone continually works on whether we are aware of it or not. We all encounter trying circumstances that can test our limits. If we can recognize when we are becoming less regulated, we are able to do something about it to manage our feelings and get ourselves to a healthy place.
This comes more naturally for some, but for others it is a skill that needs more attention and practice. This is the goal of The Zones of Regulation. All grade levels at APPS use the Zones of Regulation in their classrooms and perhaps it is a tool you could incorporate at home too.
Typical emotions in each zone include:
Blue - sad, tired, sick, frightened, nervous, shy & scared
Green - happy, helpful, loving, loved, thankful, focused & calm
Yellow - silly, frustrated, anxious, hangry, playful, energetic, grumpy & excited
Red - angry, out of control, crazy, jealous, mad & overjoyed
The focus for Grade 1 students this term, has been identifying what zone they are in in different points of the day.
We have also looked at, what we can do to get back to a learning zone.
We have discussed that the green and yellow zone are the most productive zones for us to do our best learning.
Strategies students identified to get back to a learning zone included:
5 finger breathing/taking deep breaths
Listening to music (a favourite is the 'Tickly Rain' song
Reading
Writing down their feelings
Drawing their feelings
Mindfulness/Green Time activities
