Grade 1 students will be bringing home a list of the Oxford Spelling Words. This list includes the most frequently used words by children in their first three years of school. The words that are highlighted are words your child knows and can spell correctly. At school, students will be practising the next 5 words that are not yet highlighted. It is not compulsory however if you would like to, and your child is willing, it would be great to practise with your child at home too. Some activities you could do are:
Air write the spelling word.
Get outside and write the words in chalk or using a paint brush with water.
Type the words on a computer a few times. Change the fonts and colours.
Using a magazine or newspaper, look for the words.
Bounce a ball while spelling the words out loud.
Create a sentence that contains each spelling word.
Rainbow Spelling - Write each spelling word across the rainbow. How many colours can you use?
Colour code the spelling words:
Write all the consonants in the words in blue and write all the vowels in red.
Do an Add-On-Story with your family, incorporating all of the spelling list words:
An Add-On-Story is a story where one person starts by setting the scene and then has the next person continue the story. You can keep the story going until all the spelling words have been used.
Students who are still working on their magic words will be provided a list of their current level by their teacher. Please continue to practise these with your child, alongisde their Oxford words.
