This term in Grade 1, we have been spending time focusing on skip counting and addition in maths. Below are some activities that all students would benefit greatly from as extra home practice.
Activities could include:
Counting by 1s to 120 from various starting numbers to 120.
Skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s to 120.
Reciting their Friends of 10 (e.g. 6 and 4, 7 and 3 etc.) and Friends of 20 (e.g. 18 and 2, 15 and 5 etc.)
Counting backwards by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s from 120.
Reading aloud numbers in community settings (such as letterboxes).
In Grade 1, students are expected to count forwards and backwards to 120 in these patterns with confidence. Incorporating these into part of your daily routine is a great way to ensure it is a fun process for them. Some opportunities to practice skip could be while in the car, at the shops, when counting money or preparing food etc.
Skip counting is a crucial skill that students in Grade 1 will apply across many areas of the curriculum. We are excited to see students develop this skill throughout the year, giving them confidence to solve a variety of number problems.
We have been learning all about time in our Maths sessions this term. This week, we made Sand Timers. Here are the pics of the fun we had!
We use the APPS 8 Problem Solving Tools in all areas of our Maths learning. A great question to ask your child is which problem solving tool did you use today in Maths.
