General student welfare
General student welfare covers all the work done by the entire school community to support and promote the well-being of students. Each staff member does this as part of their actual duties. The central goals are to create a healthy and safe learning and school environment, safeguard mental health, counter exclusion and promote well-being in the school community. This means support for the entire school community as well as individual support. The goal is to promote a school culture, focusing on care, consideration and positive interaction.
The efforts of the student welfare staff are intended to promote students’ learning and a balanced development of their lives in general. The central objective is therefore to prevent various problems and to discover barriers to learning. Contact with students’ parents/guardians is often of central importance in student welfare work.
General student welfare is coordinated by an interdisciplinary student welfare group. It is responsible for the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of general student welfare and the general well-being of the school. The student welfare group also promotes the participation of students and guardians in upper-secondary school activities.
Individual students’ cases are not addressed in the school’s student welfare group. The Principal chairs the group and is responsible for ensuring that it meets regularly. In addition to the principal the school psychologist, school nurse, school social worker, guidance counsellors, special needs teacher and selected subject teachers belong to the student welfare group. Often students also participate and, if necessary, guardians and outside experts are invited.
The school social worker, psychologist and nurse are available for individual student’s matters.
Individual student support is available for individual students or student groups. Individual student support refers to the school health care, the school doctor’s and the school psychologist’s services. This interdisciplinary student care is offered to individual students or student groups. An interdisciplinary group is created if necessary and with the consent of the student. Guardians attend if necessary.
Many important choices and decisions are made in the high school years and at times students need someone to talk to.
Students can turn to the school social worker for confidential discussions on private matters and personal difficulties. Parents/guardians can also contact the social worker in matters concerning a student. If additional help is needed, the school social worker can aid the student to find the right contacts. The social worker’s office is located on the second floor at the end of the balcony hallway. Social worker Gunilla Biström can be reached via Wilma, on 050 570 5830 or by e-mail gunilla.bistrom@luvn.fi.
The school psychologist supports, counsels and advises students in matters concerning their mental well-being, studies and situation in life. The school psychologist also does psychological assessments and evaluations when necessary. Parents/guardians are also welcome to be in touch with the psychologist in matters concerning a student's wellbeing or schoolwork. The psychologist's room is located on the floor under the dining hall, close to the music class. School psychologist Julia Kåll can be reached via Wilma, on 040 636 8038 or julia.kall@luvn.fi.
Public health nurses and School and Student Health Services aim to maintain and promote students’ health, well-being and ability to study. They also help prevent diseases and provide guidance on self-care. If you have questions about vaccines, sexuality, birth control, substance abuse or mental health or other health-related matters, please contact the public health nurse at your school. During the first year of study, each student has the opportunity to have their health checked by a public health nurse. Students may also book a health check-up at any point of their studies, if necessary. The public health nurse can refer the student to a doctor or other specialists, if such services are needed.
During the nurse’s walk-in hours, you can visit the nurse without booking an appointment in advance. The nurse has walk-in hours on the days they are working at the school. The walk-in hours are meant for guidance and advice on acute issues.
A health check by a school physician is usually available to students during the second year of study. The focus of the health check is on the prevention of illnesses and the early detection of health problems. Boys who have to attend call-ups and girls who wish to voluntarily undertake military service can have a preliminary health examination performed.
A physician’s statement is important in situations that threaten a student’s ability to study and to cope with studies, for example in case of mental health problems. The investigation and treatment of such problems is always planned together with the public health nurse and other student welfare professionals. More detailed diagnostics and treatment of illnesses and the follow-up of chronic illnesses are not included in student health services. Instead, the student will be referred to a health centre or to specialised medical care for an assessment, if needed. The medical care provided by School and Student Health Services aims to maintain the student’s ability to study. We do not issue medical certificates for sick leave.
In case of accidents, we give first aid together with the rest of the school staff.
