You are registered for your final exams with the DP coordinator in the autumn of DP2. Individual meetings are held where you confirm your registered subjects. Before this meeting, you should update your plans in ManageBac (MB) as subject registrations are done via MB to the IB system. Note that a requirement to be registered for the examinations is submission of the Extended Essay to MB at the beginning of DP2.
The Final Exams are scheduled by the IB and take place on the same day in all IB schools (there are several different time zones used), all over the world. There are both morning and afternoon sessions, and on the same day you can have examinations in both sessions. Most subjects have both an afternoon session and a morning session and in one session there can be two exam papers. On the other hand there might be days with no exams, depending on your choice of subjects.
Predicted grades (PG) are often submitted as part of university applications during DP2. These predicted grades are often just that, predictions, because in many subjects, you have not completed enough officially assessed work in order to accurately predict grades. All students will be given PGs in early December and late March, but the actual report card will only be printed on request. If a university requires this document and especially if it has to be sent directly by the school, please contact the DP coordinator or guidance counsellor. These grades should not be confused with the official IB PGs given late in the spring of DP2.
The official IB PGs are required by the IB in all subjects (including TOK and EE). This is the teacher’s prediction of the grade you are expected to achieve in the subject, based on all the evidence of your work and the teacher’s knowledge of IB standards. It is important that each prediction is made as accurately as possible, without under-predicting or over-predicting the grade.
Within the IB, predicted grades are for the exclusive use of grade award meetings when considering a subject’s grade distributions and the performance of individual candidates. A check on the appropriateness of results is made by comparing awarded grades with predicted grades. If there are significant discrepancies, further reviews may be conducted. In cases where there is a difference of more than 2 grades between the PG and the final grade, all externally assessed work is automatically remarked.
All assessment components for each of the six subjects and the IB Core must be completed in order to be awarded the IB diploma.
In order to achieve the IB Diploma you must fulfil certain requirements; at its most basic you must: achieve at least 24 points from your grades in the six diploma subjects, and any possible bonus points from Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay (see matrix below). You must also successfully complete the Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) element.
However, to ensure the diploma reflects sufficient breadth in achievement across subjects and the core the following requirements must be met:
CAS requirements have been met.
The candidate’s total points are 24 or more.
There is no “N” awarded for theory of knowledge, the extended essay or for a contributing subject.
There is no grade E awarded for theory of knowledge and/or the extended essay.
There is no grade 1 awarded in a subject/level.
There are no more than two grade 2s awarded (HL or SL).
There are no more than three grade 3s or below awarded (HL or SL).
The candidate has gained 12 points or more on HL subjects (for candidates who register for four HL subjects, the three highest grades count).
The candidate has gained 9 points or more on SL subjects (candidates who register for two SL subjects must gain at least 5 points at SL).
The candidate has not received a penalty for academic misconduct from the Final Award Committee.
If you would like to up-grade your results, you can resit the exams. It is possible to register for examinations (in as many subjects as you would like to retake) in either May or November. Please note that not all subjects we have at Mattlidens gymnasium are offered in the November session.
For candidates who fail the diploma on their first attempt, the school will pay for retake exams until you turn 20.
Candidates who have passed the diploma but want to try to improve their grades will pay the registration fees themselves.
Please note that we do not permit the IA (Internal Assessment) to be redone as part of the retake/upgrade. Those points are carried over and will be applied to the new examination session.
