On Friday the 24th of April, the ACPS community reflected and remembered those who have fought for Australia in various combat situations, paying our respects by creating wreaths of red and purple poppies and laying them at the front of our assembly.
Each year 6 class did an incredible job of creating wreaths that were unique and meaningful, and showed a great deal of respect during an assembly that was a little different from what they were used to. They should be incredibly proud of themselves!
Lest we forget.

We have started learning about and creating our own biographies about people we are interested in! It has been so exciting to learn more about our role models and people we love!
To kick start our term, we have been learning all about fractions. Fractions are one way we can represent parts of a whole, like cutting a cake in slices!
We have also been learning about equivalent fractions, which are fractions that are different but represent the same amount of the whole!
For CBL this term, we are learning all about science! To start us off, we have been focusing on influential scientists, like Marie Curie, and learning all about space.
We would love for you to check out this video and ask us some questions!
For the first few weeks of this term, year 6 sport has been taken over by our swimming lessons at Splash! We have been focusing on improving our skills in the water and, if we are not swimming, our knowledge of how to be safe around the water.
It has been lots of fun to be able to swim with our friends!
We will be swimming every friday from week 2 to week 6 so please make sure we have packed our towels and extra snacks!

This week at ACPS, the whole school completed a narrative cold write! A cold write is a writing task where we are given a prompt and get to create a text based on the prompt in a give time. The prompt grade 6 was given this time was the image you can see above!
It was fun to challenge ourselves to write a creative piece in a short time!
Week 3 meant learning all about 3D objects and their cross sections. We explored how the direction of our cuts in our play doh 3D objects can impact the 2D faces we see!
We have then started learning all about decimals and how to round them! Learning about this is really important when we are working with money or measurments
Our highlight of this fortnight was learning all about electricity in CBL! We first learned about electrical circuits in the real world, focusing on wires, switches, batteries and bulbs before applying our knowledge to Minecraft Education!
We were able to use redstone and levers to making working lights for our homes!
It was amazing!
For year 6 sport, we have continued with our swimming program at Splash. We only have a few weeks left to go but it has been super fun swimming with our friends.
We have all learned so much about swimming and how to be safe around water
We will be swimming every friday from week 2 to week 6 so please make sure we have packed our towels and extra snacks!

Week 5 at ACPS saw the year 6 cohort publish their favourite biography. Experimenting with structure, word choice, and figurative language, the students completed this unit by bringing to life a piece they were really proud of. Week 6 began with our participation in a conference with Shaun Tan. Incredible Australian author and the focus of our next unit, we were fortunate to listen to Shaun online, as he spoke of his journey as a writer. He is an inspiration to all our aspiring authors and we will be studying his work in close detail over the coming weeks.
Decimals are still our main focus in Numeracy at the moment and in week 5 we explored efficient ways to add and subtract with decimals, as well as how to check our answers using inverse operations. How clever!
Week 6 began our probability unit. Students have been conducting chance experiments to understand theoretical probability and experimental probability. There’s so much to learn about rolling a dice or spinning a spinner!
In week 5, we revised our knowledge of states of matter and explored how materials can change when combined with others.
We learned that mixtures are made up of two substances that can be seperated (like trail mix) and solutions are made when two things are combined and cannot be separated from one another (like cordial and water)!
It was super fun to explore these ideas in our classrooms!
Throughout this term, we have been learning all about bystanders and upstanders. Bystanders are people who don't do anything when they see an unsafe or unkind situation whereas upstanders follow our school process of "Stop, Walk, Talk"!
Our goal is to have all year 6 students being upstanders! Ask us how we are going with this each day after school!
Term 2

Over the course of weeks 7 and 8, we have continued to unpack the works of Shaun Tan and his curious characters. Focusing on themes of belonging, imagination and conformity, The Lost Thing has captured all our hearts and inspired us to be curious and kind to everyone and everything!
Week 7 saw the ending of our probability unit, focusing on how to make games fair. We are super excited to apply our new knowledge to our CBL Markey Day next term! Week 8 was the beginning of our patterns unit, where we have been exploring number patterns and the rules that determine them.
As our CBL unit begins to wrap up, we have been working hard on our science fair displays that demonstrate all the learning we have done throughout the term.
We would love if parents are able to attend on Thusday the 18th of June from 8:50am in each year 6 classroom!
As term 2 is coming to a close, we would just like to remind all parents and students to please return their library books as soon as possible. Students will not be able to borrow their full amount of take home readers if they have overdue books.
Use the QR code above to see what we have in our library!

To end the term, we finished and presented our oral presentation all about The Lost Thing book and film. It was a little intimidating to present in front of others but it was very rewarding!
Throughout week 9, we continued working on patterns and algebraic equations before revising all of the topics we have learned this term. It was good to revisit what we have learned to keep it fresh in our minds! What do you think is this rule for this pattern?
Week 9 marked the end of our CBL unit and our Science Fair presentation. It was amazing to see so many parents coming to support their students and engaging in the presentations made by the classes!
We hope you enjoying seeing our solutions to these challenges faced by others around the world!
