A variety of text types are suitable for students of all ages. In relation to home reading, the school provides home reading books that are traditionally levelled to match student’s needs. Take home reading books are matched a few levels below what a student is working on instructionally in the classroom. This is so students can practice confidently at home the skills they have been taught from school, in an easier levelled book.

As students progress through a variety of leveled text and reading skills, they will transition off the leveled readers and students will be supported by the classroom teacher to select appropriate children’s literature from the library in the form of a picture or chapter book.

While there is no set time frame for students moving off levelled readers, this might start to occur from Grade 3 onwards.

Students are encouraged to explore a variety of text types and can use their take home readers, library books or books online to complete their daily home reading.
