I intend to create an audio narrative show that discusses the experience of being disabled (and specifically the experience of having Tourette's and being neurodivergent) through a body horror metaphor.
I will be using audacity to edit the show and a combination of mics (most likely a Zoom and Rhode mic) in order to record. I will be acting all characters.
The story will follow two central characters. One who has undergone a transformation and another who is currently undergoing the transformation. These characters are the same person at different stages but will interact through a non-linear story structure.
I will be crafting a creature that is sympathetic and the protagonist, but who still gets to monstrous as a way for disabled people who feel othered to feel seen. It will be created through sound design of me using recordings of my tics in order to have it be a literal representation of my disability. I want them to sound strange and slightly off compared to the human character who will have very little audio editing done to their voice in comparison.
I specifically want to explore the experience of becoming othered and seen and non-human; going from the human to the creature because of something outside of control. How you become something else in everyone else's mind, as well as the idea of there being a normal non-disabled somewhere inside of you. I want to refute that idea and allow my disabled character to get to just exist.
I want the audience to feel seen by the show, embodying the idea of ‘art comforts the disturbed and disturbs the comfortable’; it is a story for disabled people that is meant to offer comfort and is not directed at abled people which means.
