Visual Art 2025
Visual Art 2025
Hi my name is Rebekah Surgeoner. I have been teaching Visual Art at ACPS for 5 years. Prior to this I was a classroom teacher for more than 10 years. I love teaching Visual Arts and I am very passionate about the arts being an important part of a students learning. I particularly love seeing the amazing creations and seeing their imaginations at work.
Hi, my name is Tina Thomas and I have been teaching Visual Art for over twenty years across all year levels in primary and secondary schools. I enjoy painting and drawing in my spare time and I love to go to galleries to see different exhibitions and discover new artists. I love to share this passion with students and introduce them to new art styles.
Hi, I'm Lena Sheridan. I started teaching Visual Art at ACPS in 2024. Prior to this I worked as a painting and drawing instructor for 8 years with various institutions around Melbourne. I transitioned into Primary Arts Education after working as a Chess Coach, where I discovered the joy of working with children, and went on to complete a Master of Teaching. I love to immerse myself in artmaking and am always learning from children's unique perspectives.
Term 4 Still life drawings in charcoal.
The year 5&6 students ended the semester learning about observational drawing. They used the skill of looking carefully to draw tone, light and shadows with compressed charcoal. Their observational drawing skills have greatly improved and the artworks they produced demonstrated their excellent ability to capture depth and contrast in their still life drawings.
Term 4 Clay houses
During the first few weeks of term 4 the year 5&6 students completed constructing their clay slab houses which they had designed in their sketchbooks in term 3. The students learnt about clay relief sculpting techniques and how to join pieces of their design together to bring it to life as a three dimensional relief sculpture. They coloured their houses using oil pastel and watercolours to create a wax resist effect. Everyone did a fantastic job of completing their designs and overcame many challenges with this art piece but persevered and created some outstanding houses.
Term 3 mixed up monsters
During term 3 the year 5&6 students used abstact line drawing techniques to come up with some imaginative monsters. They began their drawings by practicing taking a line for a walk around their paper. They then looked at the shapes they had created and tried to imaging what kind of monsters they could turn them into using watercolours to caputure tones and define forms. The images they created were nothing short of spectacular and showcased the depth of creativity and imagination the students have. Well done to all of them!
Term 2 year 5&6 plasticine painting.
In Ms Thomas's classes we have been exploring plasticine as a painting medium during term 2. we first looked at the work of the illustrator Barbara Reid to explore the possibilites We have learnt to draw animals from pictures using observational drawing skills which was very challenging. we overcame challenges by breaking down the pictures into small sections and drawing the shapes that we could see. When we completed our line drawing of the animal we chose we then began mixing plasticine colours to create different tones and hues. Applying the plasticine to our drawings was a lot of fun and we are learnt to create a painterly effect by blending various tones and colours. We hope to complete these artworks in the last week of term, they have taken a long time to finish and have been really challenging. we hope you enjoy looking at some of our works in progress.
Term 2 Takashi Murukami flowers
In Ms Sheridan's classes we made small flowers using the same process as below, with patterns and textures, and are working together to display them in the walkway of the school to practice our installation skills.
Term 2 Takashi Murukami flowers
During the beginning of term 2 we have been continuing our work on creating large flowers inspired by the colourful Art works of Takashi Murukami. We have begun to apply textures, colours and patterns to each individual petal using a variety of drawing and collaging materials. When we complete each petal we will then join all our pieces together to create a giant flower. We are hoping to create a giant installation of flowers in the school to make it look like a Takashi Murukami artwork. Take a look at how our works are progressing below.
Term 1
In term 1 we are creating mixed-media portraits in a pop art style. In Ms Sheridan's classes, we have been learning to mix our own colours using the colour wheel as a guide. We started by tracing our photos onto recycled plastic sheets using permanent marker. Then, we painted inside the lines with acrylic paint, and we are now working on painting a background that we will overlay our self-portraits onto. Tracing our facial features was harder than we thought - we had to choose the most important lines that made the self-portrait look like us.
Term 1 5&6 Pop Art portraits are completed and on display.
We had a great time using our knowledge of colour theory to create our pop Art self portraits. They all looked so professional and everyone in the class was impressed with the quality of work their peers produced when doing a gallery walk around the room. We learnt a a great deal about the importance of contrast in Pop Art and and how colours, lines and shapes can be used to make certain elements of an artwork stand out. We hope you enjoy viewing our portraits displayed around the main building of the school.
Term 4 Year 3&4
To finish off term 4 the year 3&4 students explored the work of artist Deb McNaughton and created abstracted patterned plates using paper clay and posca markers. The students learnt to use contrasting colours and created patterns using repetition. They captured the style of Deb Mcnaughton's work using pastel colours and bright and colourful lines.
Term 4 Years 3&4
In Ms Sheridan's classes we have started Bird's Eye View collages, imagining the view of Bunjil the Eagle from the Wurundjeri/Woiwurrung creation story. We started by choosing a satellite photographs of Wurundjeri county, including views of our school, Aitken Creek, and Melbourne's bay area. We are colouring in brown card and starting to cut and prepare recycled materials like cardboard, sand, and cellophane, and gluing them onto our card to make a collage.
Term 4 Years 3&4
At the start of this term we practised our drawing skills using an upside-down drawing technique, which makes your brain focus on the angles and shapes in the picture you're drawing. It helped us to look carefully and simplify the picture. We are so proud of our figurative drawings! You can have a look at them in the Prep Learning Neighbourhood.
Term 3 Years 3&4
During term 3 the year 3&4 students used the work of Henri Matisse to learn about shapes. To begin the task they use watercolour paints to create abstract paintings. They then practiced creating organic shapes using drawing mediums such as pencils, sharpie markers and colour slicks over the top of their paintings and filled in the negative space with a darker colour. Their final artworks displayed their understanding of using contrast when using positive and negative space. We hope you enjoy viewing their amazing creations.
Term 2
In the last few weeks of this term we began to make Dragon Eyes. We started by choosing a mythical creature, like a griffin or a minotaur, and drawing our designs in our artbooks. It was tricky to make the eye look symmetrical and also to add details that showed what our mythical creature was. Then, we wrote a description of our creature, and copied our designs onto black card. We coloured paper clay with markers and started building our eyes. We flattened the clay into an eye shape, then added a glass eye in the middle. Then we rolled cylinders and twisted them together and added other shapes like balls and spirals to add to our sculptures. We are so happy with how they turned out! Have a look at 4A's sculptures from Ms Sheridan's class below.
Term 2
During the first few weeks of term 2 all the year 3&4 students combined various different mediums such as oil pastel, acrylic paint and paint sticks. They used these materials as well as collage to create an artwork of a bright donut inspired by the artwork of artist Wayne Theibaud. The students began this task by creating the textured background first using oil pastels and scraping techniques over the top of the pastel with acrylic paint. They then learnt how to draw an ellipse using a greylead pencils and practiced doing this until they got it the donut shape accurate before they used paint stick to colour and add shade to their donut. For some added texture the students used real hundereds and thousands to make their donuts even more realistic. Below are some amazing examples of some grade 4 donuts.
Term 2
This term in Ms Sheridan's class we have been learning about how t-shirts are made. We were really surprised by how many chemicals are used and how the way t-shirts are made affects the environment.
We are using recycled t-shirts donated by the community to make textile bowls. Starting with sugar cane pulp bowls for a mould, we are layering small pieces of fabrics with a glue mixture to create a strong bowl structure. Upcycling fabric instead of throwing it out helps to make the planet a better place, and we're hoping more people will start doing this too!
Term 2
We have been creating mixed media artworks of donuts. We explored the elements of line and colour, using paint sticks to create a background. When, we scraped acrylic paint to create pattern and the illusion of perspective. We investigated the element of form by drawing a donut that appeared three-dimensional.
Term 1
In Term 1 we are learning about using proportion to draw faces, and applying this skill to drawing a self-portrait using mirrors. On one half of our self-portrait we are drawing our face realistically, looking carefully at the shapes and lines that make up our features. On the other half, we are drawing our interests in bright colours. Did you know that the eyes are actually halfway down the face? The most challenging parts of this project so far have been: drawing the nose, finding the right colour to match our skin tone, and making our self-portraits look like us.
Term 1 Nature drawings
During the last few week of term one in Miss Thomas's class the year 4 students learnt about observational drawings using natural objects. They explored the artworks of Australian naturalist artists and used their understanding of tone, line, colour and shape to create their drawings using pencils. It was very challenging to draw on black paper with white pencils as the shading needed to be reversed. When drawing with light drawing materials on dark surfaces the emphasis should be placed on the light areas of the object in order to capture the form accurately. We had heaps of fun making these and we hope to extend our explorations of observational drawing techniques in during the year.
Term 3 year 1&2
In term 3 the year 1&2 students created yarn lizzards using indigenous artworks as inspiration. They learnt to sculpt the shape of a lizzard using pipe cleaners a paper to create an armature to work with and then wrapped their wool onto the lizzards carefully to create the body of the lizzard. We hope you like their colourful creations.
Term 2 Castle and Sun
During the beginning of term 2 in Mrs Surgeoner's class we are recreating the famous Paul Klee painting Castle and Sun using black pastel and watercolour. We started by drawing still life pictures using different shaped blocks and then used the same shapes and lines to draw our Castle and Sun. We finally painted with watercolour.
Term 4 year 1&2 Landscapes
During the start of term 4 the year 1&2 students completed a landscape drawing demonstrating their understanding of foreground, middle ground and background in landscape artworks. The students learnt to use scale to make things look like they were getting further away in their images and also learnt how to use different light and dark colours to make things look like they are further away or up close to the viewer. They demonstrated excellent colouring skills and have improved their understanding of the various elements of a landscape artwork.
Term 2 Waterlillies
During the beginning of term 2 in Miss Thomas's class we have been completing our waterlillies. Most of them are almost finished and we wanted to share the final product with you all. In the first three pictures below you can see each part of our entire waterlilly construction. We have been busy putting the pieces of them together to create a 3D masterpiece using our problem solving skills to make them pop up.
Term 2
Last term in Ms Sheridan's class we started working on a major sculptural project of 3D paper waterlilies. We are now in the final stages of putting it together. We created a background using liquid blue dye and rock salt crystals to look like water. Then we made a lily pad using paint sticks in different values of green. We are working on cutting petals that we will glue to the lily pad so they pop out, like a real lily growing out of the water. We can't wait to show you our finished sculptures!
Term 1
During the first few weeks of term 1 in Ms Thomas's class we have been exploring the element of line to create the appearance of texture on animal drawings. We used black markers and ball point black pens to create fur for our animals. We then used various watercolour drawing mediums such as pencils, paint and paint sticks to draw flowers for a background. We then cut out our animals and pasted them onto our background so they stand out. We hope you enjoy our display in the foyer of the front office at school.
Term 1
We started the term by creating paper sculptures using coloured strips of paper to represent different parts of ourselves. We were using zig zag lines, curved lines and spirals and a special decoder that helped us to find what the elements meant. For example, a green arch meant, 'I have a brother' and a blue fringe meant, 'I wear glasses'. It was challenging to create the different shapes but we practiced and got the hang of it.
term 4 Prep Art
The prep students learnt about forgrounds and backgrounds in art to create a house in a landscape drawing using paint sticks. They carefully drew thier landscape using a pencil and then coloured it in with the paint sticks. To complete their artwork they cut out a house that they drew on sepreate paper and pasted it into the foreground of their landscapes.
Term 4
During term 4 the prep students have been busy recycling fabrics and scrap paper to create collages. The students identified warm and cool colours and made choices about which colours shemes they would use to create their collage. When they finished they decorated them with pom poms and added a frame to complete their compositions. We hope you love the final results. They are now on display in the library.
Term 3
Our first favourite project this term was using clay to make Spatial Sculptures.
Have a look at the description and sculptures by Ms Sheridan's classes on display below.
Term 2
In Week 3, we started a new project making artworks inspired by the French artist Wayne Thiebaud. He loved sweets and cakes, and we are going to make lollipops using patterns and colours like Thiebaud used in his paintings. We started by using bright liquid dye on colour-diffusing paper to make swirls and dots. Then the teacher sprayed our paper with water. We were amazed to see the colours mix together and blend into different colours.
Term 2
In Ms Sheridan's class, we finished our plasticine self-portraits. We matched our skin colour with the with right plasticine colour to start. Then we learned how to make balls, sausages, cones, and discs for our faces, eyes, nose, ears, and hair.
Term 1
We have been making sculptures to represent ourselves using cardboard cones, balls, paint and yarn. In Ms Sheridan's class, we have been celebrating our different skin colours by choosing a colour to paint the face on our sculpture. We then chose colours of paper for clothes and practiced our gluing to attach them to the body. Finally, we added different colours of yarn for hair, googly eyes, and drew our mouths.
Term 1
Self-portraits by Ms Sheridan's classes are on display in the Prep Learning Neighbourhood! Have a look and see if you can find them.
Term 1
In term 1 we are focusing on learning the routines of the art room while practising our drawing and colouring skills. We will be focusing on activities all about ourselves, starting with a self-portrait.
Term 4 year 3&4
To finish off the term the year
