Task: Mountain bike riding has become a very popular activity over the years. The use of different materials has allowed the development of lighter and more comfortable bikes.

Prepare a report which analyses why bike designers have chosen disc brakes as the braking system. You are to research the properties of the materials used and justify their use in the listed parts of the brake. Explain why they have been chosen ahead of other alloys or metals or composite material. You will need to research these materials and then ascertain their performance in terms of weight, strength and cost.
