Engineering Reports and their significance in engineering practice
An engineering report is a type of technical editing that presents a problem, analyzes it, and offers solutions. It involves collecting and compiling data and ideas, conducting testing, and organizing the information you gained into comprehensible results for the reader.
The guide to the left outline the requirements for and engineering report from Monash University.
Task: Mountain bike riding has become a very popular activity over the years. The use of different materials has allowed the development of lighter and more comfortable bikes.
Prepare a report which analyses why bike designers have chosen carbon fibre for the frame, carbon steel for the cogs and aluminium for the rims. You are to research the properties of these materials and justify their use in the listed parts of the bike. Explain why they have been chosen ahead of other alloys or metals. You will need to research these materials and then ascertain their performance in terms of weight, strength and cost.
Mountain bike frame construction has evolved over the years. Explain the difference in joining techniques for the frame. (welding, lugs, carbon fibre)
