High school is a crucial time for students to develop the skills of self-motivated, life-long learners. From time management and effective study techniques to seeking help when needed, these strategies empower students to excel academically and to apply these skills in their own areas of interest throughout their lives.
Staff at Wagga Wagga High School regularly discuss strategies for success in their curriculum areas with all their classes. We also offer High Potential classes in in Years 7 to 10 and the school funds Elevate Education workshops for all Year 11 and 12 students, that focus on important strategies for successful study. Parents and carers play a pivotal role in ensuring academic success by role-modelling and supporting students in basic wellbeing strategies and in strengthening their organisational and planning skills. They are also key to fostering a calm learning environment at home, encouraging good study habits, and promoting a growth mindset.
Here are some documents you can use to help your teenager build organisational skills:
Blank timetable – Check this with your teenager each night to make sure they have all the books and resources they will need for the following day. Add in work and social commitments before planning study blocks where students will complete homework or assessments at home.
Google Calendar – Support your teenager in scheduling due dates for assessments and planning how they will complete the assessment around other scheduling commitments on Google Calendar using their school profile. Here is a video that demonstrates how to do this. Students will be shown how to set up their Google Calendar in TLC lessons and encouraged to record assessments and other obligations in the calendar.
Resource list – Check this with your teenager regularly to ensure that they have the necessary equipment. It is a valuable opportunity for your teenager to learn to take responsibility for their learning.
