To learn about the purpose of the investigation
What is the purpose of this investigation?
The Southern Brown Bandicoot is a small native marsupial that is found in the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park.
The introduced Red Fox is a major predator of the Southern Brown Bandicoot and one of the reasons why it is a threatened species.
To protect the Southern Brown Bandicoot from foxes, National Park Field Officers manage fox populations through a fox baiting program.
Before they can do this, they must first prove that Southern Brown Bandicoots live in an area.
To determine the presence of Southern Brown Bandicoot and fox populations in an area, National Parks Officers install wildlife cameras at sites that have suitable habitat (the abiotic and biotic features) for Southern Brown Bandicoots.
If the wildlife cameras detect the presence of Southern Brown Bandicoots and foxes, fox baiting may be planned.
The purpose of the virtual fieldwork task is to analyse data collected at two sites at Bobbin Head to determine which one is the more suitable for the Southern Brown Bandicoot to live at and to recommend to National Parks Field Officers which one they should place a monitoring camera at.
Before you do this, you must first plan the investigation. This includes researching:
Southern Brown Bandicoots habitat
The study site
The equipment you will use
Once you have done this you will be ready to analyse the data collected from the two sites.
Good luck!!
