When you're working as an employee (there are no under 18 restrictions), you must pay income tax on payments you receive from your employer. Your employer deducts tax from your pay and sends those amounts to the ATO.
When you work for an employer, you earn money called income.
In Australia, you must pay income tax on the money you earn.
You don’t pay this yourself – your employer takes tax out of your pay each time (called PAYG – Pay As You Go).
Your employer then sends this tax directly to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
At the end of the financial year, you get a payment summary or income statement showing how much you earned and how much tax was paid.
You use this to complete your tax return – if too much tax was taken, you get a refund; if not enough was taken, you may need to pay more.
When you start a new job, your employer will ask you to fill out a Tax File Number (TFN) Declaration Form.
This form tells your employer how much tax to take out of your pay.
Why it’s important:
It links your pay to your Tax File Number (TFN) so the ATO can record the tax you’ve paid.
It helps make sure you don’t pay too much or too little tax.
If you don’t fill it out, your employer must tax you at the highest rate.
Key parts students should understand:
Personal details – your name, date of birth, address.
TFN (Tax File Number) – unique number that identifies you to the ATO.
Residency status – most students tick “Australian resident for tax purposes.”
Tax-free threshold – you can claim this with one employer (usually your main job) so you don’t pay tax on the first $18,200 you earn in a year.
HELP/HECS debt question – if you have a study loan, ticking this means your employer withholds extra tax when your income is high enough.
Your employer takes out less tax from each pay.
Your net pay (take-home pay) is higher.
Example:
Weekly income = $500
With threshold claimed → Tax withheld might be $25 → Net pay = $475
Your employer assumes all of your income should be taxed.
They take more tax than necessary from each pay.
Your net pay is lower each week, but you will usually get a refund when you lodge your tax return.
Example:
Weekly income = $500
Without threshold → Tax withheld might be $70 → Net pay = $430
At tax time, the ATO sees you earned less than $18,200 for the year and gives you back the extra tax.
A payment summary is, now, a digital document summarising how much you've earned, and how much tax has been withheld from your income, over the past financial year as an employee of a business.
This information will be sent directly to the ATO by your employer. You will then be able to view them through your ATO online services.
A you can see in the example image it states:
How much income tax has been withheld for the financial year
How much you have been paid, in different categories (if relevant to your employment) and the relevant codes
Your unique tax file number
Your tax return is a form you can complete online or by paper, get help from a tax agent or use the ATO Tax Help program.
