K-1-2 have been working so hard in literacy this term. Take a look at this incredible writing from some of our youngest students. Can you believe that only a few short months ago these children didn't really know how to write at all or even what sounds each of the letters in the alphabet make? Just amazing to see how far these students have progressed!
The children have also been learning to read and record numbers in patterns, especially focusing on counting numbers to and beyond 100.
You may also notice a few new little faces among the group. We've loved having our 2026 kindergarten students visit us regularly this term. They are already engaged, happy little learners. We can't wait until they can join us every day in the new year.
The primary class have been learning about the structural features of narratives. They've been focusing on the orientation, complication and conclusion as well as how characters and events are often shaped by the setting. 'Charlotte's Web' is the featured text, then students are using those skills to analyse their own independent reading texts.
Which one doesn't belong? Why?
One of the regular activities we do in literacy is studying vocabulary. In particular, we learn to identify new words and try to work out their meanings. We can do this using several different strategies:
Phonics: the sounds of language and the letters and groups of letters that represent them
Orthography: the conventions we use to turn a spoken language into a written one
Morphology: the units of meaning that make up the words we use
Etymology: the history and origin of words and how they’ve changed over time
One key strategy for vocabulary comprehension is to use the context in which the word is used to help work out its meaning. The primary class has been discussing how often a word can have several meanings, and therefore, the context is important for understanding the correct meaning.
One student asked this fascinating question:
What word has the most meanings?
Hmmm...what a great question!
Do you know?
What word in English has the most meanings?
How many different meanings does it have?
We'll give you a hint. It's a word you know REALLY well!
