Student Work

Despite having a busy term already, there is still a lot to look forward to in the final three weeks ahead. The primary students are heading to camp in Week 9 and on the last day of term, we will all celebrate the end of term by completing our fundraising for the Heart Foundation by hosting our Jump Off.  A huge thank you to those families who have already been onto the website and started raising money. We are almost halfway to our target of $750 already, so I'm feeling confident we can well and truly exceed the target by the end of term. Please see the email sent home a couple of weeks ago for details on how to register and start working towards individual prizes while adding to the school's total.

Every year, a special selective camp runs called the Hunter Super Nova camp. It is for high potential and gifted kids in stage 3 and your parents have to write a glowing description about you to get in. I was so excited when I got my invite! It's a 3-day camp at Point Wolstoncroft, on the shore of Lake Macquarie. There are 6 subjects; math, ICT (tech), science, The Big Buzz (environmental science), History and English. Every child applies for one, and of course, I chose math. Each day consisted of a maths session, then an outdoor session. 

I really enjoyed maths, even though there were only four girls in my group of 25. I made a new friend called Amity. One afternoon, we talked for so long about maths that everyone was looking for us, because they didn't know where we were! In maths we said our favourite number when we introduced ourselves. We did mostly algebra and problem-solving during our lessons. Our math teacher had one really hard algebra question that she wasn't going to put up because she thought it would be too difficult, and I was the first to get it right! I even beat the really smart boy. He didn't know we were racing, but we were.

Our outdoor activities included kayaking (which the girls were fastest at), jetty-jumping, archery and orienteering. Before we began orienteering, the instructor told us that the pool was north. So, we began and walked up past the pool so that now the pool was west. However, Isabelle, who was holding the map, oriented it so that the north on the map was still at the pool. We tried to tell her that the pool was NOT north, but she was like, "She literally JUST said that the pool was north."

Well you see, Isabelle, the pool is not the North Pole.

It took some persuading before she turned the map the right way.

I had so much fun at camp and couldn't believe it was over when it finished. Amity and I are still in touch and I hope we stay friends. If you want to apply for the Hunter Super Nova Camp, don't ask me, ask Mrs. Baxter because she knows the answers.
