Building interest
Teacher dance resource developed by The Arts Unit
Building interest
Discuss your interest in starting a dance group with your supervisor and principal.
Some points to discuss:
budget and funding
rehearsal time
student numbers
performance opportunities
what the group will contribute back to the school
alignment with the school plan.
Promotion and advertisement
Promoting the dance group in the school community is vital. Engaging the whole school community is a good tool in gathering interest. There are a variety of ways that you can achieve this:
announcement at assemblies
note home to students and parents
announcement in the school newsletter
posts on the school Facebook page
school website announcement
advertise with your colleagues and ask them to remind students as well.
It is important to target a number of the above promotion avenues in order to achieve the most success for your group. Involving the wider school community (colleagues, parents/caregivers) will give your group more reach and the school community will feel a part of the process.
Expression of interest
Knowing an estimate of the amount of students who will show up to auditions is vital in the planning process. In your advertisement ask students to write their name on a sign up sheet outside your classroom or where the auditions will take place or on the school noticeboard, somewhere that is easily accessible for the students.
If auditions are taking place before or after school you will need a permission note signed by their parent/carer. Discuss this with your supervisor and/or Principal.
