You will:
explore the entertainment industry context
explore elements of industry employment
discuss legislative requirements for the entertainment industry
explore specific roles within the entertainment industry
identify personal attributes and skills required for effective work practices
discuss emerging technology in the entertainment industry
explore effective workplace communication, teamwork and inclusion
discuss conflict management.
Welcome to this @The Arts Unit Creative Class on working effectively in the entertainment industry.
Lessons 1 explores employment and legislative requirements.
Lesson 2 discusses industry work practices and how technology is used in the entertainment industry.
Lesson 3 focuses on how to work effectively with others in the workplace.
When working in the entertainment industry it is vital that individual employees maintain their knowledge and understanding of current issues and trends.
When you are required to obtain new information relating to an industry, specific research skills are needed to ensure the most appropriate and current information is being used.
Key research skills include:
identifying and accessing relevant information
questioning techniques to obtain information
validating information
interpreting and using information correctly
sorting, summarising and presenting information appropriately.
There are many sources of information that can be used to obtain current and emerging information on the entertainment industry. These include:
colleagues and manager/supervisor/team leader
experienced industry personnel
industry bodies and professional associations
internet
journals
libraries
participation in industry events and activities
training courses
unions
workplace manuals.
The cultural industries sector includes:
community cultural development
entertainment
film, television and radio
interactive digital media
library and information services
museums, galleries and cultural heritage sites
performing arts
visual arts, craft and design.
Discuss each of the industries that make up the cultural industries sector and the relationship of each industry to the entertainment industry.
Within the entertainment industry there are many different examples of live performances and events including:
charitable events
concerts
corporate theatre and communication
cultural events
dance competitions and performances
drama
festivals
filmed performances
public celebrations
screen and media
sporting events.
In small groups, using at least 2 different sources, research an area of the entertainment industry.
Prepare a summary document and then present the information to the class. You may like to use the template or design your own.
Include: a general definition of the industry area, types of performances, venues, audience demographics, performers, companies, images as well as how the aspect of industry may interact with other areas.
When working in live performances and events there are also individual departments within that entertainment industry workplace including:
audio
costume
front of house
hair and make-up
lighting
sets, props and scenic art
staging
vision systems.
Outline the tasks performed by these departments and the interrelationship or how they work together with each of the other departments.

Some ongoing current issues and trends that can have an impact on the entertainment industry include:
government initiatives
changing nature of the consumer marketplace
funding
public liability
risk management
Work, health and safety (WHS)
emerging technologies.
Identify other emerging current issues or trends and how they are influencing the entertainment industry in Australia and globally.
Discuss the implications of these current trends for entertainment industry workplaces, individual work practices and the delivery of service to the consumer.
