Hayden Maguire

"Holidays Revisited" captures the memory and holidays traveling as a family in a Combi Van. I found that memories and experiences became tactile when found objects and treasured family heirlooms were incorporated into the paintings. My work developed and transformed with the influence of Reg Mombasa. My practice took on surreal painting techniques giving it a dream-like aesthetic. As I explored the objects and photos collected over years of family holidays, I began to incorporate the practice of Man Ray, Christo, and Jean Claude who wrapped objects to embody them with mystery and surrealism. The influence of assemblage and installation artists Yin Xiuchen and Huma Mulji provided the powerful metaphor of the suitcase as a container for memory.
