Artist of Influence: Laith McGregor

When I found myself stuck in my art process, I looked for something that had my interests peaked at the current time of my struggle. In this case, it was three emerging musicians, Summrs, Kankan, and Yeat. These artists are a part of the underground hip-hop scene, which is music that is out of the mainstream and general commercial audience’s eyes. These Independent artists make their music through their own sources, with no promotion, industry push, or no label to help them reach a broader audience. The underground scene has brought out some of the best artists to date that is now on top of the hip-hop scene.

The current generation coming through is displaying a brand-new sound and genre that has brought an enormous amount of attention to them. This new genre is called ‘Plugnnb’, which is a fusion of Plugg and RnB music. Summrs, Kankan, and Yeat are some of the most predominant Plugnnb artists in the underground scene right now and are continuing to grow a larger fanbase every day. My artist of influence came from the artworks and displays of Laith McGregor, an Australian artist whose practice spans from drawing, painting, and sculpture to video. His intricately drawn works inspired me to create drawings of my own that reminisce the complex nature of his art. In my body of work, I tried to capture realistic and life-like facial and clothing features through the use of a lead pencil. I believe I did this strongly in the depiction of Yeat’s portrait, with his skin tone and clothing balaclava. When the audience views my artworks I would like them to think about who these individual artists are and what influence they have had on the underground hip-hop scene. This is paramount to my depiction of the artists and how the audience will engage with the displayed structured artwork.
