Young readers benefit from multiple, daily exposures to books and reading. We need to both foster their love of literacy and provide explicit reading instruction.
We strongly recommend the following in order to support your child's reading development during their first year of school.
Reading for Enjoyment: Read to your child a book of their choice e.g. a storybook or age-appropriate chapter book. Ask questions about the story, make predictions and have fun! Make this part of your daily routine.
Explicit Instruction: Incorporate the following elements as part of your child's daily learning to read program at home.
You will be given access to an online program called 'Reading Eggs'. Complete the component called FAST PHONICS. This is a fantastic way to reinforce the synthetic phonics program we teach at school!
Go to https://www.speldsa.org.au/SPELD-SA-Phonic-Readers-New-Series and read a decodable reader together every day. Practise making the sound of each letter and then blending the sounds to make a word. After doing this, try reading the book fluently and without sounding out each letter!
